Thank you, Michael, for teaching with so much well-informed knowledge and challenging us to try also the rough stuff! And to the new singers: It was great meeting you! We should do that again!
The Hamburg group meets every Tuesday at 8pm. Since many of the Hamburg singers are new to this as well we keep practising to sing the shapes. It's a good opportunity for newbies to join us!
Below is a picture from the workshop as well as an audio file with "Eternal Day" (Sacred Harp 383) a certain Swedish participant called in the afternoon.
What can I say? - It's tomorrow!
Just las weekend we met Michael Walker at the 2nd Poland Sacred Harp Convention in Warsaw. Now we get to meet him again this weekend. - It's going to be very enriching for the Hamburg group to meet yet another teacher. Also, new people have registered via email, so it's exciting to meet people with interest in the shape note tradition who are living in Hamburg.
Wasn't it interesting to see an audience react to Sacred Harp? The Bremen friends came last Saturday to help us presenting Sacred Harp to the visitors of "Nacht der Kirchen" in Hamburg. Visitors of "Nacht der Kirchen" are usually the curious kind, and indeed they seemed very patient during our first two singing blocks.
I thought they honestly tried to understand what's going on. When we showed them on the big sheet how the music looked like they seemed a bit satisfied that what we did actually was written down somewhere in a book instead of witnessing a bunch of people being possessed by some spirits of an orgiastic cult. After the third block they lost their shyness and asked us more things and I loved how we could interact with them.
It is an unusual setting to sing Sacred Harp in front of an audience. You could fall into the trap of reflecting on "What am I doing here?" and "How does that sound to others?" - Actually those are thoughts which are necessary to escape in order to sing Sacred Harp.
But nevertheless I thought it was very precious to have this opportunity to share this powerful music.
Thank you, Bremen friends for your help, and thanks for the Hamburg singers for jumping right into it! I hope the demonstration will get us many people to Michael's workshop in two weeks! Flyer / Facebook event
I'll try to post some pictures from last Saturday some other time. Till then there's an audio though of "World Unknown" in German here.
Look what a cool video the Bremen friends got here.
They’ll come and help us presenting "Sacred Harp" at the Hamburg "Nacht der Kirchen", this Saturday 14th November at 8pm. We’ll put together a list and make sure that us newbies know some of tunes. I think this is a great chance to share the Sacred Harp experience with many people!
